How to Measure a Window for Curtains

Step 1: Measure the curtain rod or window frame to find the width. If you are measuring a rod, be sure to measure between the end caps or finials. Carefully measure the entire area you want covered by a curtain to accurately find width. Add 1.5 to 2.5 times more than the width of your window for a full look across the window. Divide the width you measured plus an extra 1.5 to 2.5 by the number of panels you wish to use and that is the panel size you should select.

Step 2: Determine where you want the curtain fabric to end – directly in line with the window frame, just below the frame, or at the floor – and measure the length from the top of where you will hang the curtain rod to the wall or floor. For floor length curtains, allow 3/8 inches between the floor or ground and the bottom of the curtain to hang properly.
